Professor Matthäus Schiestl (1869-1939) had an enormous following by 1918. A book collection of his art that came out at the time called it "Images from the Master." Like all earthly fame, his star has faded, but we can see why he was so popular. He did Catholic art with warmth and charm.This Nativity scene was one of his most famous. In German the title is "Weihnachten im Zillertal," which means "Christmas in Zillertal." Zillertal is a beautiful part of the Austrian Alps. All of the Professor's Catholic art is placed in German settings, most of them outdoors. Placing Christ in scenes we recognize from our lives is a way of reminding us He is always with us.This one was painted in 1918. It is a more colorful version of a similar one which we also carry.
