Not much is known about St. Anne. We can infer from Scripture that she was a holy woman, fit to raise the Mother of God. We can also infer from our own experience that she would have helped Mary, the young, first-time mother, with the difficult responsibility of raising a child. Most of us know the tremendous love between grandmothers and their grandchildren, and we are sure this was true within their family as well.As for the artist, J Wahl is likely to be Josef Wahl, born 1875, a Catholic artist from Dusseldorf who did a lot of Catholic paintings in parish churches and elsewhere. Judging from his history of works, he was a Catholic "go to" artist of the time. We've included a sample from a 1903 illustration in pretty much the same style.
