Sandpipers No. 4

A flock of Sandpipers and their reflections at the water's edge on the beach. These little Sandpipers showed up on our beach on a quiet spring morning, making a quick stop on their way from South America to Canada. Their annual migration is truly amazing: they sometimes fly this 3,000-mile route nonstop for six days straight! They only stayed on our beach for a couple of days, but I spent a lot of time with them, trying to capture both their beauty as individuals and the abstract appearance of them as a group. My bird images are all traditional photographs, but I love the dreamlike quality of watercolors and have photographed and developed this image in such a way that it more closely resembles a watercolor painting than a photograph.
