This activity is a great intro to any novel, informational text, or unit about war. I've used it for three different novels, and it always works well. The first sheet gets students thinking about war, adversity, and humanity. I've included vocabulary questions as well as thought-provoking ideas to make students think about how war affects their own lives and society. The second sheet uses Stephen Crane's poem "War is Kind" to present multiple views of war and how it impacts those around us. Students will annotate, color code, answer questions, and think thematically. Includes: - Pre-reading sheet to activate prior knowledge - Introduction to new vocabulary - "War is Kind" by Stephen Crane - Color code guide - Critical thinking questions about poem - Full answer key Total Pages: 4 pages Answer Key: Included Teaching Duration: 45 minutes
