Purchased through our close import partner Royal Coffee in Oakland, CA, Sumatra Bener Meriah Mandiri is a great example of a classic Indonesian wet-hulled coffee. In wet-hulling, which is the standard coffee processing method in Indonesia, coffee is stripped of all its protective coating after fermentation and then dried, as opposed to traditional washed coffees which are dried with their innermost protective skin (called parchment), intact. This unique process results in coffees with flavor profiles as challenging as they are compelling; flavors can range from earthy characteristics of  peat and tobacco all the way to more savory notes of cedar or herbs.
