Vikas

When Vikas was 10 years old, his father was killed in a traffic accident with a truck from a large company. The company bribed the police to close that matter quickly, and the family got a tiny lump sum as compensation. Vikas' mother was approached by her uncle who encouraged her to put Vikas in a rock quarry. The rock quarry recruiters promised good food and monthly wages for the mother, and Vikas went to live and work in the stone quarry. The monthly salary was a lie, and life in the quarry was torture. Vikas saw other workers crushed with heavy rock falls and accidents with dynamite. The workers had to fend for themselves and were regularly unable to work due to exhaustion.  After about a year, this boy and the other slaves were discovered by one of our rescue teams. Police officers helped our team to recover the children and take the supervisors to court over their abuses. Vikas now lives at The Sylom Children's Home where he is learning to read.
