The St. John of God holy medal. March 8th is his memorial. He is patron of alcoholics, booksellers, dying people, firefighters, heart patients, hospitals. He is also known as Giovanni di Dio, Juan de Dieo, and Juan Ciudad. He was a shepherd in the Castile region of Spain. He led a wild and misspent youth, traveling over much of Europe and north Africa as a soldier. He suffered a brief period of insanity. Even though he had no religious conviction himself, he peddled religious books and pictures in Gibraltar. In his 40's he received a vision of the Infant Jesus who called him John of God, and had a conversion experience. He wanted to make up for the misery he caused as a soldier so he left the military and began caring for the sick, poor, homeless and unwanted. He we a friend of St. John of Avila, who's life he tried to follow. He founded the Order of Charity and the Order of Hospitallers of Saint John of God.
