St. John Paul the Great (1920-2005) holy medal Memorial is October 22. For many years Karol believed God was calling him to the priesthood, and after surviving two nearly fatal accidents, he responded to the call. In 1956 he became a professor at the University of Lublin. Venerable Pope Pius XII appointed Wojtyla an auxiliary bishop in Krakow on 4 July 1958.
