THE STORY Designed by Wallace Rice in 1917, the Chicago flag is probably the most iconic symbol of the city (aside from Tom Skilling). The four stars represent some of the most important events in Chicago’s history (Fort Dearborn, the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, the World's Columbian Exposition of 1893, and the Century of Progress Exposition of 1933–34) and the two blue bars represent the main bodies of water.
