Umm Kulthum's Farewell - وداع كوكب الشرق أم كلثوم
Umm Kulthum was known as the “Star of the East” for a reason: she was a generational performer and the most popular Arab singer of modern times. Her death brought Egypt to a standstill, as 4 million Egyptians lined the streets to catch a glimpse as her cortège passed. This long-forgotten short documentary film captures the spectacle of her funeral. This poster is exceedingly rare and was designed by famed artist Abdulaziz. There is a very high level of detail in the image, which is uncommon for a stone lithograph print. Umm Kulthum is depicted as millions remembered her, in the majestic pose that characterized her late career: lifted hair, signature glasses, modest dress and an elegant pearl necklace. She's framed in an evergreen wreath, with the title in gold over a blue ribbon. The sentence at top summarizes the feelings of a nation: “The farewell of the beloved of millions, the one who taught us love and taught us to sing for life.” Scarcity Index div { overflow: visible; } .prog
