Highly rare vintage 8x10-inch sepia-tone portrait in a pith helmet, boldly signed and inscribed in blue fountain pen in the 1930s. Some minor soiling along the right edge, a few minor surface dings and a small scuff in the area to the right of his head. After making his bones as a bit player, no-nonsense Roy Barcroft was signed by Republic Pictures in 1943, rapidly becoming the studio's top villain in B-westerns starring Don "Red" Barry, Wild Bill Elliot, Sunset Carson, Allan Lane, Roy Rogers and Gene Autry. Among his nearly 400 film credits, encompassing virtually every genre, were countless roles in horror, sci-fi, fantasy, crime, and mystery flicks and serials, including Dick Tracy (1937), Night Key (1937) with Boris Karloff, Flash Gordon's Trip to Mars (1938), The Phantom Creeps (1939) with Bela Lugosi, Another Thin Man (1939), Flash Gordon Conquers the Universe (1940), The Manhunt of Mystery Island (1940) as the unforgettable Captain Mephisto, Haunted Harbor (1943), The Purple Mon
