However it was the piano he excelled at and after obtaining his music degree in 1942 he went on to gain international success as a jazz pianist and composer. By 1944 Billy had joined the Ben Webster Quartet and was playing at New York’s 52nd Street when he met the legendary pianist Art Tatum who would go on to become his mentor. Other great jazz names Billy was to play with include Billie Holiday, Don Redman, Charlie Parker, Stan Getz and both Dizzy and Miles!
