About Jan Toorop (1858-1928) was a Dutch-Indonesian painter who is known for his unique style that blended Symbolism and Art Nouveau. He was born on December 20, 1858, in Poerworedjo, a small town on the island of Java in the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia). Toorop's mother was Javanese and his father was a Dutch civil servant. Toorop moved to the Netherlands at a young age and studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Amsterdam.
