COLD WATER SURFER: The Early Days is the next book from Sandy Blackman on the history of Oregon Surfing. The idea of surfing perfectly captured the zeitgeist of 1960s America. Wanting to surf, males began to migrate to beaches. Challenges of cold water, lack of experience, transportation issues, no role models, non-existent to poor equipment did not deter them. In the mid 60s surfers began forming surf clubs, organizing and competing in local surf contests within three regions: Seaside, Agate Beach, and Coos Bay. The Blackmans cover some of the 60s & 70s influences: Portland surf shops, the migration of surfers from Portland, Willamette Valley, California, Washington, and the social fabric of the era as told by surfers in their own words and entertaining stories. Now in their sixties, seventies, and eighties, their memories and abilities may have dimmed but not their passion for surfing. Dedicated to Scott Blackman and all pioneer surfers.
