The flag of Kyrgyzstan was adopted on March 3, 1992. The 40 rays on the sun in the middle of this flag represent the 40 Kyrgyz tribes; alternate interpretations suggest 40 warriors of the mythical hero Manas. In the center of the sun is a red ring crossed by two sets of three lines, a stylized representation of the crown or tunduk of the traditional Kyrgyz yurt, a symbol replicated in many facets of Kyrgyz architecture. The red portion of the flag represents the peace and openness of Kyrgyzstan.
