Maryland was founded as a colony of England in 1634, by Cecil Calvert, known as the second Lord Baltimore. His father was the first Lord Baltimore. The designs and colors of the Maryland State Flag came from the state seal. The black and gold colors of the Flag of Maryland represent the Calvert family. The red and white stand for the Crossland family, which was the name of the first Lord Baltimore’s mother.
