The current flag of the Republic of South Africa was adopted on April 27, 1994, after the first free elections and the end of apartheid. A new national flag was adopted to represent the new democratic government of South Africa that represented all South Africans. When the new flag was designed, it was specifically stated that the colors had no official meaning or symbolism, other than their choice from their use in the past. However, according to Brownell, the flag's designer, the red symbolizes the blood shed in the country's various conflicts and wars.
