At Paper & Book Intensive at Penland, North Carolina, in 1995, I met Nell Meldahl, who taught me how to make Japanese Handscrolls. Nell was wonderful, and when she said, "Come visit," well... I took her up on her invitation. I was traveling a few months later, in the Fall of that year, back to Penland, but by way of New England, and I visited Nell and her family on Cape Cod along the way. Nell and her husband, it seemed to me, were doing things right in the way they were raising their two young boys. They taught their kids how to do things. There was no TV in the house.
