Children have been rolling hoops since the time of ancient Greeks through the hula hoop craze of the 1950's. Hoop rolling was a popular child's pastime in early America, and judging by advertisements and children's books, the game remaained enormously popular throughout the 19th century. In the mid-1800s, the Vermont Novelty Works in nearby Springfield VT made thousands of wooden rolling hoops. We continue this tradition, bending hoops here at our southern Vermont shop in the old-fashioned way, steaming green lumber from local trees to form bent wood parts for our musical instrum
