The Beautiful and Damned by Abigail Vance

Artist StatementI decided to design this book cover because it wasn't one that had been designed for often and it was one of the books on the list that I had read.I also I enjoy F. Scott Fitzgerald's work and this book of his, in particular, is loosely based on his life with his wife Zelda. It's a morality tale, a meditation on love, money, and decadence, and a social documentary which I enjoyed. I took the photo and staged everything in it myself. The jewelry and diamonds represent the glitz and glam of the character's life's as New York socialites during the jazz age before and after the Great War. The mirror represents the characters' disproportionate appreciation of and focus on their past, which tends to consume them in the present. — Abigail Vance
