Wuthering Heights by Josh Frederick

Artist StatementThis cover is part of a series using silhouettes as a main theme. I chose to use silhouettes as a uniting theme because of their historical use in posters, as well as the fact that it makes for strong imagery and lends itself to be easily recognized. For this book cover, I used the silhouette of the main female protagonist, Catherine Earnshaw. One of the main themes of the novel, is the all-consuming nature of passion. The plain white, marble textured background was inspired by Catherine's upper-class upbringing, and it contrasted well with the deep red ink that consumes and envelops her silhouette. The wispiness of the ink drop gives almost a ghostly effect, alluding to the spiritualism throughout the book, and foreshadowing Catherine's fate in the book. — Josh Frederick
