Before hand-sculpting each piece in small batches, Melville digs the clay used in construction from the fertile soil of the Pacific Northwest. She prefers to create mostly unglazed ceramics to showcase the raw variations and various hues of the earth, from iron-rich red tints to shades as black as the earth, itself. The raw finish of her clay-work is accented by hand-painted designs, often displaying simple line work outlines of natural forms, producing a finished result
