Oya: Within the Yoruban pantheon, Oya is a highly respected deity celebrated for her fierce nature, protective qualities, and transformative influence. She is frequently depicted as a warrior and is revered as the goddess of storms, death, and renewal. As such she is associated with storms, whirlwinds, and the destructive forces inherent in the natural realm. Additionally, she is associated with the Niger river. According to Yoruba mythology, Oya was originally a human woman. However, upon her death, Oya transcended into the realm of divinity, being deified owing to her exceptional earthly capabilities. As a formidable warrior and guardian of women, she played an indispensable role in the Yoruba revolution and the emancipation from the clutches of slave traders. I create my artwork using a blend of illustration and digital synthography. All artwork is original. Copyright Amy Hedrick, crookedstickapothecary.com, all rights reserved.
