There are ancient legends about the history and origin of the dreamcatcher that exist among several Native American tribes, but chiefly through the Ojibwe and Lakota nations. Dreamcatchers are sometimes referred to as "Sacred Hoops,"  The dreamcatchers of the Ojibwe were traditionally used as talismans to protect people during sleep, usually children, from bad dreams and nightmares. Other Native Americans, mostly mothers would use them to protect their children when they couldn't be with them.   It was believed that the night air is filled with both good and bad dreams.  When a dreamcatcher was hung above the sleeping area in a place where the morning sunlight can hit it, the dream catcher attracts and catches all sorts of dreams and thoughts into its webs. The good dreams can pass through and gently slide down the feathers to comfort the sleeper below.
