CELESTITE (or CELESTINE) - rough crystals "A" Quality Celestite (or Celestine) is my personal favorite of all stones and I treasure my personal collection of these beautiful light blue crystals. In my more selfish moments I would keep them all, but most of the time I want to share them with everyone. Celestite is a mineral form of Strontium Sulfate. It was named for its delicate blue color. The mineral is fairly soft (Mohs hardness 3-3.5) so it is generally too soft for use in jewelry. You will likely notice that there is a white powder residue in the bag. This is powder that rubbed off from friction between the stones during shipping and handling. Some people think that the powder is highly flammable but in fact it is not. Derivatives of this powder are commonly used in fireworks but in the nitrate form, not the sulfate.
