Inspiration "In this painting, I was striving for a classical feel of a portrait. In the moment of painting it, I failed to get the right flesh tones and the right brush quality and the right edges. And so I wiped it out. Wiped the painting back down to the surface. The color pink that remained was a combination of background color and foreground color--the telltale pink of many of my pieces. I then rebuilt the painting on top of the flattened background--with a realistic rendering on top of this flat pink surface, and what emerged was this portrait. This fragment of a portrait. Just a fragment of a face, but with a sense of form and a suggestion of the rest of the figure. Her gaze was so poignant to me that it evoked a painting of another era. So there I stopped. With the warm orange and the rosy pink, this portrait stands as a signature piece of my work. A contemporary take on the traditional portrait. Flat but full. Classical but colorful."
