The fish hook is known in Hawaii as the makau and stands for strength, prosperity and respect for the ocean. In the early days of Polynesian settlement in Hawaii, fishermen created fish hooks from whatever material was available. Using just handmade tools and files, they carved and chiseled fish hooks. The god Maui used one called Mānaiakalani to hook the islands together to try and unite them, making the makau a part of Hawaiian lore. The Makau now represents “a connection with the sea, its creatures and the fragile balance of life on the Islands.” These may be customized with up to 8 letters or numbers for an additional fee of $1.25 per character.
