Hedy Lamarr was an Austrian-American actress who also made important contributions to the field of technology. Born in 1914, she rose to fame as a Hollywood actress in the 1930s and 1940s, but she also had a passion for science and invention. During World War II, she was concerned about the safety of military communications and developed a novel idea for a secret communication system that could not be easily jammed by enemy forces. Lamarr worked with composer George Antheil to develop a frequency-hopping system that would allow messages to be transmitted wirelessly without interference. This system used a piano roll to randomly switch between frequencies, making it difficult for anyone to intercept the transmission.
