Raku fired wheel-thrown little neck vessel with raspberry, mahogany and blues with crystalline and crackling textures. This piece is on the top left shelf in last photo. Raku is an ancient Japanese technique where glazed ceramic pieces are taken from the 1600 F kiln while they are still glowing red hot and then placed in a material that catches on fire, such as sawdust or newspaper. This technique starves the piece of oxygen, and the rapid cooling process plus lack of oxygen results in crackled glaze and unique color patterns. The results are completely unique and often unexpected. These pieces are decorative and not water-tight.
