Atlanta has a false sense of origin rooted in the late nineteenth century due to its destruction during the Civil War. In 1836 the construction of the Western and Atlantic Railroad provided a trade route to the north and midwest US with the area around Atlanta – then called Terminus – serving as the terminal point for these lines in the south.
