A third generation Hawaiian, Patsy Takemoto Mink was the first woman of color to serve in the United States Congress and the first Asian American woman to run for president. Though best known as principal author of Title IX (the foundational legislation that mandates gender based equality in federally funded education) Mink was the chief advocate of so many policy initiatives for equality and for so long, the first of her major legislative victories was vetoed by then President Richard Nixon!
