It's All on the MapsHow has your community changed}Locate a map of your town that's atleast 25 years old. Your library,chamber of commerce, or planningcommission should have one.Compare that map with one fromtoday. What has changed? What hasremained the same? Are all thechanges for the better? Which oneswould you like to undo? Why?3. From AboveAsk someone from the SoilConservation Service, the U.S .Geological Service, or a localcollege or real estate agency ifyou can see aerial photos ofyour community made over aperiod of time. What story dothese photos tell about changesin your community?4. TourYour CommunityTake part in a tour of yourcommunity. Look for three differentexamples of architecture fromdifferent historical periods. Whenand why were the buildings orhouses built? What types ofmaterials were used? Trysketching, photographing, orwriting down information about thebuildings.5. Extra, Extra, Read All About It!Create a one-page poster,newspaper page, or flyer thatdescribes a past period of yourcommunity. Include news, ads, oreditorials that might haveappeared at that time. Share youritem with others.6. Sing Someone's PraisesCreate a story, song, or poemabout the efforts of one personwho has had a major impact onyour city or town.7. Take a TripVisit a local museum, historicalsociety, library, or town hall tolearn more about the history ofyour city or town. What new thingsdid you learn?8. Take PrideVolunteer at an event, fair, orspecial occasion in your area.Find an event that brings peopletogether in a celebration ofthe past; for example, one thathighlights important dates inhistory, or one that recognizesthe past contributions ofdifferent cultures.9.
