The Graphic Artist and his Design Problems by Josef Müller-Brockmann [2003, Reprint]
The Graphic Artist and his Design Problems [Creative Problems of the Graphic Designer, Design and Training in Commercial Art] by Josef Müller-Brockmann, 2003. Verlag Arthur Niggli Ltd., Sulgen and Zürich, Switzerland. 10.5 x 9, pp. 200 with German, English and French text. Design by Josef Müller-Brockmann. A practical manual offering guidance demonstrating the basic problems of graphic design. Müller-Brockmann’s book became a standard work that still serves as an historic practical guide well beyond the boundaries of Switzerland. This 2003 edition is a complete reproduction of the original edition of 1961 and also includes the additions Müller-Brockmann made for the 1983 paperback edition. Heavily illustrated with (735) black and white and some color examples chosen by the author, featuring mainly objective and constructivist methods. The first section traces the path from illustrative to functional graphic design, including the meaning of design elements and their use and effect in publicity. The middle section contains fundamental thoughts concerning the work of the graphic designer including a chapter on “Science and Visual Communication” regarding semiotics and communications research. In the last section, the education and training system of the graphic designer is presented. A nearly fine hardcover and dust jacket with the slightest hint of wear.
