The earlier part of his career was spent studying under fellow Uruguayan painter and âfather of Latin American Constructivism,â Joaquin Torres Garcia. During these early years of Dumasâs career, in the Cubist tradition, his unique abstract paintings did not deal with the human form in a representational manner. The eventual shift to his now notable delineation of the human form was prompted by his travels to the South American countries of Bolivia and Peru, after having lived with gypsies and miners. In the mid-sixties, while teaching painting and drawing, Dumas still found himself haunted by his impressions of the people and events encountered during his travels. The remnants of these influ
