It develops into a multi-stemmed shrub usually 4 to 6 feet tall and 6 to 8 feet wide, with branching stems topped by rosettes about 18 inches across. Leaves are long, narrow, and recurved, colored dull green to yellow-green and sometimes flushed with orange or pink under drought or strong light. Unlike the species, the leaf edges are nearly smooth, lacking prominent teeth, while older leaves dry and persist along the stems, adding to its layered, woody structure. Flowering occurs from late fall into winter, when upright inflorescences rise above the foliage carrying dense clusters of tubular coral-red flowers that hang closely along the stalks and attract pollinators.
