Aloe maculata, commonly known as the 'Soap Aloe,' is a stemless succulent native to South Africa, reaching up to 18 inches tall and 2 feet wide. It often forms clumps and spreads aggressively via stolons. The triangular leaves vary in color from pinkish-red to bluish-green depending on light exposure, with distinctive H-shaped spots and sharp brown teeth along the margins. It produces flat-topped inflorescences in hues of orange, red, and yellow, flowering mainly in summer but sporadically throughout the year. Despite its invasiveness, it's a popular choice for gardens, thriving in full sun or partial shade and adapting to various soil conditions. Hardy down to about 20-25 degrees Fahrenheit, it's suitable for growing under trees or in exposed areas with poor soil. Aloe maculata adds interest to gardens year-round, particularly in winter when its vibrant flowers contrast with the surroundings. Images of mature specimens shown for reference.
