Aloe mitriformis, now known as Aloe perfoliata, is a robust succulent native to the Cape mountains of South Africa. It forms clumps of rosettes with thick, fleshy leaves that curve inward, resembling a mitre. The leaves are bluish-green, turning reddish in dry conditions, and edged with small white teeth. It produces striking red tubular flowers arranged densely on branched stalks, flowering mainly in summer. This species thrives in well-drained, sandy soils with full sun exposure and mild to hot summers. It's drought-tolerant but susceptible to scale insects and aphids, which can be managed with proper care and maintenance. While it can tolerate temperatures down to 5 degrees Celsius, it's best brought indoors during winter in cooler climates. Aloe mitriformis is ideal for rock gardens, embankments, and retaining walls, where its fast-growing, ground-covering nature adds interest with its vibrant flowers and spiky foliage.
