A Japanese talisman of good luck, modeled after the founder of the Zen tradition of Buddhism, Bodhidharma.Bodhidharma was a Buddhist monk who lived during the 5th/6th century AD. Little is known of the monk but according to one tradition, Bodhidharma gained a reputation among other things, for wall-gazing. Legend claims that he sat facing a wall in meditation for a period of 9 years without moving, which caused his arms and legs to fall off.
