Susudake (すすだけ; "smoked bamboo") chashaku is very much sought after in Japan due to the rarity of the Susudake bamboo. Susudake bamboo is taken from IRORI open hearth in a traditional Japanese house with which it is built with. Bamboo gets exposed to cooking heat and smoke and takes on a rich sooty color. The smoked bamboo is very limited and rare so the craftsmen stocks them whenever it becomes available. It is said that it takes 100-200 years for bamboo to become Susudake.
