But trouble was already brewing because owner Walter O’Malley was determined to replace aging Ebbets Field, a journey which ended on the other coast when the “Bums” relocated to sunny Los Angeles. Although not ideal for baseball, with its extremely short left field dimensions, the cavernous LA Coliseum could hold over 100,000 fans, and the Dodgers would see success there winning their first pennant in LA in 1959. When Dodger Stadium opened in 1962, it was considered the jewel of MLB ballparks (it still is by many). The winning tradition started in Brooklyn by Branch Rickey and Jackie Robinson in the late 1940s has continued in LA to this day.
