Bleier played in 10 games in his rookie season, running for 39 yards on six carries and adding 68 receiving yards on three catches. Then in December of that year he was drafted into the U.S. Army and he later shipped out to Vietnam. While deployed Bleier was seriously wounded, being shot in the left leg and having his right leg and foot damaged by shrapnel from an enemy grenade, for which he was awarded both the Bronze Star and a Purple Heart.
