Otters are a highly important keystone species when it comes to water quality!  A healthy otter population is an indication of a healthy water shed, which is pretty impactful considering the 13 species of semi aquatic mammals can be found on 5 continents.  North America has 2- the North American River Otter and the Sea Otter.  Otters have been poached for their fur for hundreds of years, and between that and water way pollution, by the 1970's the river otter habitat was reduced by about 75% of what it was.  But with reintroduction efforts, protections against poaching, and clean up of our waterways, these animals have made a come back!  The North American River Otter story shows us that its not too late to help endangered species!
