The Foxglove (Digitalis Purpurea) is a plant with stunning flowers that carries a duality in its being both medicinal and toxic. Since the XVI century, the plant started to be used in the treatment heart disease but, short time later, it became hard to find the exact dose due to the fact that the amount of the active component present in the leaves, known as digitalin, varies depending on a number of factors including light conditions, type of land, and leaf age. Many cases of intoxication and poisoning were reported and Digitalis Purpurea went on to be considered poisonous, although it continued to be used as a medicine under certain circumstances. Many mystery writers have used Digitalis Purpurea as the murder weapon in their novels. Such is the case of the famous Agatha Christie, who used it in 13 Problems for Miss Marple and Appointment with Death.
