Aztec Sunstone Calendar T-shirt
According to the www.azteccalendar.com website, there were two Aztec calendars, one called the xiuhopualli that has 365 days and describes days and rituals related to seasons. And a second calendar called tonalpohualli or, the day-count. Today it is also referred to as a sunstone. The image in this t-shirt is from a turquoise sunstone we located and purchased in Mexico over 25 years ago. The true meaning and purpose behind the sunstone remains an enigma. It was dedicated to Motecuhzoma II, the ruler who likely sponsored creation of the original sunstone now displayed at the National Museum of Anthoropoogy in Mexico City, and it also incudes the anniversary date of the birth of the sun and rebirth of Huitzilopochtli as the sun. History tells us it was used for religious purposes and likely to be a ceremonial altar to the Aztec sun god, Tonatiuh.
