About This Composition The Symphony No. 9, "From the New World", popularly known as the New World Symphony, was composed by Antonín Dvořák in 1893 while he was the director of the National Conservatory of Music of America from 1892 to 1895. It is by far his most popular symphony, and one of the most popular of all symphonies. The musical term largo refers to a dirge-like tempo between 45-49 bpm. Typical tempo range is between 68-104 bpm and not at the largo tempo. Syncopation and the powerful chord sequence at the beginning contribute to the musical majesty of this piece.
