This is a very pretty acorn shaped box made out of Ponderosa Pine Burl (Pinus ponderosa) with Red Palm (Cocos nucifera) cap. Ponderosa pine is is the official state tree of Montana. It is a magnificent species that holds the record for the tallest known pine. I was very fortunate to obtain a piece of it's very rare burl. When I hauled the burl out for cutting, I thought that there was definitely a mistake in labeling. Pine can not be this heavy! But when I cut into it, the fresh pine scent filled the whole workshop. Yes, it is pine alright, but guess what? The burly wood is saturated with pine resin! In fact, this wood is so dense that I can thread it directly instead of using a hardwood insert. The coconut cap, BTW, is not even considered hardwood. Palm belongs to the grass family. I really like the interesting pattern in a cross-cut palm cap! This is a nice box for your valuables.
