This is a very pretty acorn shaped box made out of Sassafras (Sassafras albidum) with Black Walnut Burl (Juglans negra) cap. A native of Eastern North America, Sassafras is an aromatic species with many uses. The wood smells so good when turned so I leave the inner surface of the acorn un-sealed for your sniffing pleasure. The aromatic oil is used to make root beers, fragrance, aromatherapy, medicines (including the psychoactive drug Ecstasy). Native American tribes used the tree to ward off evil spirits so this timber must have a very strong, positive energy (if you are in to that). I turned this acorn cross grained and am very pleased with the result. Capped with black walnut burl, another American species with many uses including the highly regarded dark wood.
