This is a very pretty acorn shaped box made out of Burr Oak (Quercus macrocarpa) with Black Walnut (judlans negra) cap.  Two domestic woods combined in this earthy acorn.  Black Walnut needs no introduction, it is the popular dark wood from the temperate with wide utility.  Here, I have a very nicely figured piece of walnut for the cap. Burr oak is a rarer thing since it is not a commercial timber.  It has the largest acorn of all the oaks in North America.  The ray fleck pattern of burr oak is prominent as seen here.
