This place mat is a Partial In The Hoop Project and what this means is that just about the entire project is constructed ITH with a little being required on a regular sewing machine to finish.  The majority of the place mat is done In The Hoop, however, the back gets sewn to the front using a regular sewing machine.  You will need a machine capable of doing machine embroidery and a 7x12 or larger hoop.  You will receive very good tutorial with lots of photos.
