It is used as an emulsifier for the formation of base creams, sometimes used as evanescent emulsions, partially neutralized with an alkali. The free stearic acid in these creams produces a pearly appearance. Stearic acid creams may appear cracked due to drying or with lumps, due to reactions of this with zinc or calcium salts.
